R. Benjamin Glenn, CPA

Leadership

Ben began his career with BPS in 2005 and was named a shareholder in 2019. He brings more than 20 years of experience in tax compliance and planning services for individuals, corporations, and partnerships to the firm and its leadership team.

At BPS, Ben serves a range of tax and accounting services in his role as trusted advisor for his clients – advising them on how to increase not only the profitability of their businesses but more importantly their overall value.  Ben is certified as an Exit Planning Advisor and works closely with businesses as they either transition ownership to the next generation or move toward an exit.

He is the lead tax professional on BPS' Insurance Industry Group. Ben has successfully consulted on the formation of new captive insurance companies, defended IRS examinations regarding their status as an insurance company for federal income tax purposes and submitted private letter ruling requests to the IRS. Ben is highly sought after among companies considering starting their own captive insurance companies as well as a resource for industry professionals who need expert tax advice on this niche area of insurance.

Captive insurance companies are most often used by large corporations to lower their insurance costs. However, small, closely held companies can also take advantage of the tax and business benefits of setting up their own captive. I welcome discussions with companies that want to explore setting up a captive. BPS is nationally recognized in this specialty area and will guide you through IRS and case law requirements.

Ben also serves on the BPS Telecommunications Industry Group. In addition to corporate income tax issues, he has experience in calculating tax and fees specific to the telecommunications industry such as Universal Service Fund, Regulatory Fees, 911, state and local sales tax, and municipal fees. He also advises on property tax reporting for his telecommunications clients.

He also leads the State and Local Tax (SALT) Service Division which specializes in income tax, sales tax, franchise tax and property tax planning and compliance.  The BPS SALT team works extensively in making sure that every exemption, state tax credit and planning opportunity is a part of your overall tax plan.

He earned a Bachelor of Arts and Sciences from Louisiana State University. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, South Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants, South Carolina Captive Insurance Association, and The Friendly Society Restored.

After hours – and after tax season - Ben enjoys spending time with his wife Kara and their two children. He’s an enthusiastic LSU football fan and has an above-average interest in personal fitness, but a below-average golf game.
